What the Ombudsperson Does (Indicative)
The Ombudsperson is expected to function independently and impartially to ensure that grievances under MGNREGS are handled in a time-bound manner. Typical responsibilities include acknowledging and registering complaints; examining records/work registers; conducting site visits; calling for explanations from implementing agencies; recommending corrective actions and recovery wherever required; and submitting consolidated reports to the competent authority. Strong ethics, community orientation, and familiarity with rural governance processes are key to success in this role. Additionally, the Ombudsperson may coordinate with district officials to hold awareness sessions, maintain confidentiality of complainants, promote transparency through periodic public hearings, and encourage proactive mediation so that minor disputes are resolved early without escalating into prolonged grievances.
