Role Responsibilities
Staff Nurse (MHU)
The Staff Nurse is the clinical anchor of the Mobile Health Unit. A typical day begins with preparing the vehicle clinic—checking basic supplies, validating drug stock, emergency kit, and ensuring registers and consent forms are ready. At the outreach point, the nurse conducts quick triage and records vitals, prioritising the elderly, pregnant women, children, and patients with fever or respiratory symptoms. Under the direction of the medical supervisor’s standing orders, the nurse provides basic nursing care such as wound dressing, oral and topical medication administration, and first-aid for minor ailments; complicated cases are stabilised and referred to the nearest PHC/CHC. The role includes counselling for maternal and child health, nutrition, anaemia, menstrual hygiene, and adherence to treatment for TB, diabetes, hypertension and other NCDs. The nurse also supports immunisation sessions scheduled by the department, maintains treatment and referral registers, explains danger signs to caregivers, and coordinates transport or follow-up where needed. Before leaving the site, the nurse completes documentation, updates HMIS/line lists as instructed, and reviews community feedback to plan the next visit.
Laboratory Technician (MHU)
The Laboratory Technician ensures reliable point-of-care diagnostics in the field. Responsibilities include preparing the testing area, performing daily instrument checks, and maintaining a clean workflow that meets biosafety standards. The LT collects and labels samples correctly, follows aseptic technique, and conducts basic tests as per programme protocols—such as random blood sugar, haemoglobin screening, urine routine, malaria rapid tests, and other approved kits. For TB or specialised investigations, the LT performs sputum collection, ensures leak-proof packaging, maintains a clear chain-of-custody, and coordinates transport to the designated laboratory. Quality control is a core duty: the LT verifies kit expiry, calibrates devices where applicable, runs control tests as required, and records results neatly in lab registers and electronic formats. Biomedical waste is segregated and disposed of as per guidelines. At day’s end, the LT reconciles stock, prepares a brief report for the team lead, and flags any unusual clusters or results that need rapid public-health action.
Teamwork, Community Interface & Reporting
Both roles work as one unit with the driver/attender and field facilitators to keep the MHU punctual and patient-friendly. They help the team follow the daily route plan, set up a shaded, queue-managed waiting area, and ensure privacy during examinations and sample collection. Clear and compassionate communication with village leaders, ASHAs, and anganwadi staff is essential to mobilise priority groups and to arrange follow-up for referrals. After each session, the team compiles a short summary—footfall by age/sex, services delivered, tests done, medicines issued, and referrals made—so that district supervisors can monitor coverage and plan repeat visits. Regular housekeeping of records, timely indents for consumables, and a culture of safety and respect for patients are considered part of daily professional conduct in the MHU.
